DISSERTATION TOPIC:
“BLACK WOMEN'S JOURNEY TO EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP”
“Black Women’s Journey to Executive Leadership” by Belinda Higgs Hyppolite is a qualitative study that explores the lived experiences of Black women who have attained executive leadership roles in higher education, particularly within predominantly White institutions (PWIs).
The study reveals that Black women’s path to executive leadership is shaped by systemic barriers such as glass ceilings, stereotypes, and marginalization, yet sustained by resilience, strong mentoring relationships, social networks, and support from faith and family.
Despite being significantly underrepresented in executive roles, the participants demonstrate that success is possible through persistence and strategic navigation of institutional challenges. The research emphasizes the need for intentional institutional change, including better support systems, equitable opportunities, and inclusive leadership pathways to increase representation and long-term success.
